Thomas Shadwell was a famous English writer. He lived a long time ago. He was a poet and a playwright. This means he wrote poems and plays for the stage.

Shadwell was very busy. He made a new play almost every year. His plays showed how people acted and lived. Some of his plays were funny. One was called Epsom Wells. Another was called The Squire of Alsatia. That play was about adventures in a part of London.

Shadwell had a wife named Anne. She was an actress. She performed in his plays. They had four children. One son was a writer. Another son was a doctor. He helped Queen Anne and King George I.

Shadwell had a famous rival named John Dryden. They did not always get along. They wrote poems to tease each other. In 1689, things changed for Shadwell. He was named Poet Laureate. This was a very special job. It means he was a top poet for the land. He died in 1692. A bust of him stays in Westminster Abbey.
