He was born in Strensham in 1613. As a boy, he watched people very closely. He would judge if they acted well or poorly.

Butler is best known for a long, funny poem. This poem is called Hudibras. It was a satire, which is a way of using humor to mock people or ideas. The poem was very popular. Many people used his funny words in everyday speech. It was even so famous that other writers tried to copy his style.

Butler also liked to paint. Some people said he was not very good at it. However, he had a great friendship with another artist named Samuel Cowper.

Later in life, Butler worked for important people. He served as a steward, or manager, for the Earl of Carbery. He also traveled to France on a mission. He died in 1680 from a sickness called consumption.
