Much of her early life is a mystery. Some say her father was a barber. She may have traveled to a place called Surinam. While there, she met a leader. His story helped her write her most famous book, *Oroonoko*.

Aphra also worked as a spy for King Charles II. She went to a city called Antwerp to do this work. The job was hard and she did not make much money. She had to sell her jewelry to pay her way home. Later, she wrote plays for the stage in London. Her play *The Rover* is very well known. She died in 1689. Today, she is buried in Westminster Abbey. A famous writer named Virginia Woolf said Aphra Behn helped women find the right to speak their minds.
