He worked with Francis Beaumont for many years. He also worked with Philip Massinger. Fletcher even wrote some plays with Shakespeare. He wrote close to fifty plays in his life.

Fletcher was known for making new kinds of stories. He helped make the tragicomedy popular. A tragicomedy is a play that is part sad and part funny. It is not a full tragedy because no one dies. But it is not a pure comedy either. He also wrote comedies of manners. These are plays about how people act in society. Fletcher died in 1625 from the plague. He was buried in Southwark. People can still see a stone for him at Southwark Cathedral. His work helped change the way plays were written for a long time.
