His life followed a path of many changes. He was born in France in 1915 to parents from Wales and America. His father was a painter from New Zealand. His mother was an artist and a Quaker.

After his mother died when he was six, his family moved to the United States. Merton went to college at Cambridge and then at Columbia University in New York. At Columbia, he studied English and made many close friends. He graduated with a degree in 1938. After that, he began a new journey toward a religious life.

Becoming a monk involved many specific steps and rules. First, he joined the Franciscan Order, but he later moved to the Trappist monastery. He arrived at Gethsemani in December 1941. He was accepted as a postulant and given the religious name M. Louis.

He had to learn Trappist sign language and a daily routine of work and prayer. In 1944, he made temporary vows. Later, in 1947, he took solemn vows that bound him to the monastery for life. He was also ordained as a priest in 1949.

As a writer, Merton was very productive within the monastery walls. He often wrote in a room called a scriptorium. He wrote many books about spirituality and how to live simply. He also wrote many poems, such as those in his book Thirty Poems. Some of his other works include The Sign of Jonas and New Seeds of Contemplation. He even taught mystical theology to new monks at the abbey. His writing helped many people understand the life of a monk.

Later in life, Merton looked outward toward the whole world. He became interested in how different religions could understand each other. He studied Eastern religions and talked with important spiritual leaders from Asia. He was a strong supporter of non-violence during the 1960s. He spoke up about racial tolerance and social equality. In 1968, he went on a tour of Asia. During this trip, he met the Dalai Lama in India.
