Theodosius I, often called Theodosius the Great, was a powerful Roman emperor. He ruled from 379 to 395.

He is a major figure because he was the last leader to rule the entire Roman Empire. After his death, the empire was permanently split into two parts. These were the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire. His reign was a time of intense religious change and military struggle. He worked to unify the empire under one faith and one rule.

His journey to the throne began in Hispania, a region in the Iberian Peninsula. He was born around January 11, 347. His father, Theodosius the Elder, was a high-ranking general.

The young Theodosius likely grew up in military camps. He learned leadership by following his father on various campaigns. In 374, he served as a commander in the province of Moesia. He successfully defended this area against invading Sarmatians. However, his life changed when his father was executed under mysterious circumstances. This forced Theodosius into a period of retirement in his homeland.

Political changes eventually allowed him to return to service. In 379, a massive crisis hit the empire. The eastern emperor, Valens, had been killed at the Battle of Adrianople.

This defeat against the Goths left the Roman military in ruins. Emperor Gratian appointed Theodosius to take charge of this military emergency. He was formally invested with the imperial purple at Sirmium on January 19, 379. He faced the difficult task of rebuilding an army from almost nothing.

To fix the military, Theodosius used desperate recruiting measures. He conscripted farmers and miners to fill the ranks. He also allowed many non-Roman auxiliaries into the army. This included Gothic deserters from beyond the Danube.

In 382, he ended the Gothic War through a settlement. The Goths were allowed to settle south of the Danube. They remained autonomous, meaning they lived under their own leaders. They acted as nominal allies to the Roman Empire. This peace lasted during his life, but it created future problems for other emperors.

Religion was another central part of his rule. Theodosius was a devout Christian who supported the doctrine of consubstantiality.

In 381, he convened the First Council of Constantinople. This council of bishops established Nicene Christianity as the official orthodoxy. It also labeled Arianism as a heresy. While he appointed non-Christians to high offices, he could not stop Christian zealots from damaging pagan temples. One famous example was the destruction of the Serapeum of Alexandria.

During his reign, Theodosius also worked to expand his power through war and marriage. In 386, he married Galla, the sister of Emperor Valentinian II. This marriage helped consolidate his political and military strength. He also fought two civil wars to secure his authority. In 388, he invaded the west against the usurper Magnus Maximus. In 394, he fought against Eugenius.

His victory in September 394 made him the ruler of the entire empire.

As a leader, Theodosius was known as a diligent administrator. He was also described as austere and merciful. He spent much of his time in his capital, Constantinople. He improved the city by expanding the Forum Tauri. This became the largest public square of the ancient world.

Some historians even call his era a "Theodosian renaissance" due to a revival in classical art.

His death in January 395 marked a turning point for history. He left the empire to his two young sons. Arcadius took the eastern half, and Honorius took the west.

These sons were considered weak rulers. They presided over a period of foreign invasions and court intrigues. This instability helped weaken the empire. However, the division between east and west remained until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the late 5th century.
