Italica was a Roman settlement in the province of Hispania Baetica. Today, this area is part of southern Spain near Seville. His father, Marcus Ulpius Traianus, was a distinguished senator and a general. His mother, Marcia, was a Roman noblewoman. While some ancient historians claimed he was purely Iberian, modern scholars confirm his Italic lineage. His family likely originated from the town of Tuder in central Italy.

Trajan rose through the ranks of the Roman military during his youth. He served in many contested frontier regions of the empire. In AD 89, he served as a legate for the Seventh Legion. During this time, he supported Emperor Domitian against a revolt led by Antonius Saturninus. He later served as a governor in Germania and Pannonia. These military roles helped him build a strong reputation among the soldiers. By AD 91, he held the high office of consul.

Nerva was an elderly leader who lacked support from the Roman army. To prevent a revolt, Nerva adopted Trajan as his heir in AD 97. This adoption was based on Trajan's outstanding military merits. Some historical accounts suggest the decision was pressured by the military. Once he became emperor in AD 98, Trajan began a period of intense activity. He managed both the defense of borders and the growth of the state.

Trajan's military campaigns led to massive territorial growth.

These conflicts resulted in the incorporation of Armenia, Mesopotamia, and Assyria as Roman provinces. By the time of his death, the Roman Empire reached its maximum territorial extent.

Beyond war, Trajan was a philanthropic ruler who focused on public works. He oversaw the construction of the Forum of Trajan, a large public space. He also expanded social welfare policies to help the Roman people.
