Thelodonts were a group of extinct fish. They lived a long time ago. These fish did not have heavy armor plates. Instead, they had many tiny scales.

These scales were very small. Most were only 0.5 to 1.5 mm wide. Each scale looked like a tiny teardrop. They had a small base to hold onto the fish. The scales pointed backward. This helped the fish swim through the water.

Scientists study these scales to learn about the fish. The scales are very strong. This makes them common fossils.

Most thelodonts lived in the sea. Some lived in fresh water, too. Many species liked to live near coral reefs. The small scales helped them move through tight spaces. These scales protected them from rubbing against rocks.

We know very little about their bodies. This is because they had no hard bones. They had a soft skeleton instead. This makes it hard to find whole fossils. But some fossils show they had a stomach. They also had tails shaped like a fork. This makes them look a bit like modern sharks.
