It is a dialogue. A dialogue is a story told through conversation. In this book, Socrates talks to a young man named Theaetetus. They also talk with a teacher named Theodorus.

The group wants to find a definition for knowledge. They want to know what it truly means to 'know' something. Socrates uses a special way to teach. He says he is like a midwife. A midwife helps a mother bring a baby into the world. Socrates helps people bring new ideas into the light. He does this by asking many questions.

They look at three big ideas. One idea is that knowledge is just what we sense. For example, one person might feel cold in the wind. Another person might feel warm in the same wind.

This makes the idea hard to prove. They also look at other ideas about truth.

In the end, they do not find a final answer. This leaves them in a state called aporia. Aporia is a feeling of being stuck without a solution. Socrates says that wonder is a part of being a philosopher.
