It follows the lives of people working in the White House. The story focuses on the fictional Democratic administration of President Josiah Bartlet. Most of the action happens in the West Wing of the building. This is where the Oval Office and senior staff offices are located. People love the show because it shows the daily work of the government. Many critics and professors call it one of the greatest shows ever made.

Making the show involves a large group of actors called an ensemble cast. They play many different roles in the Executive Branch. The main characters include the President and the First Lady, Abbey Bartlet. Other important people are the Chief of Staff, Leo McGarry, and the press secretary, C.J. Cregg. Characters like Josh Lyman and Toby Ziegler help write important speeches. Some workers, like Sam Seaborn, write speeches for the President. Even personal aides like Charlie Young are part of the core group. These characters show how many people work together to run a country.

Aaron Sorkin created the series and was the lead writer for the first four seasons. He wrote or co-wrote 85 of the first 88 episodes. The show first aired on NBC on September 22, 1999. It ran until May 14, 2006. After Sorkin left, John Wells became the new head writer. Other directors and writers helped lead the show in later years. The show was produced by Warner Bros. Television. It was a very expensive production that cost at least $2 million per episode.

The show won many big awards during its run. It earned two Peabody Awards and three Golden Globe Awards. It also won 26 Primetime Emmy Awards. This included winning Outstanding Drama Series for four years in a row from 2000 to 2003. While the show was very popular, its ratings changed over time. In later years, it had about 16 million viewers. The show was especially popular with high-income viewers. This was an important group for the show's advertisers.

Behind the scenes, the show had many real-life moments. The actors sometimes had public disagreements about their pay. Some actors worked together to ask for higher salaries. The show also faced sadness when actor John Spencer died. He had a heart attack in 2005, just like his character did on the show. Martin Sheen even gave a memorial message before the next episode aired. The series eventually ended after seven seasons. It remains a famous example of how stories can explore politics and leadership.
