It is known as a masterpiece of the Rococo era. This style of art is often seen as light and playful. The painting is also called The Happy Accidents of the Swing. It was painted by the artist Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Today, people travel to see it in the Wallace Collection in London. It is his most well-known work of art.

In the painting, a young woman sits on a swing. She wears a bergère hat, which is a shepherdess hat. As she swings, she flings her shoe into the air with her foot.

A young man hides in the bushes to the left. He holds a hat and points at her dress. An older man stays in the shadows on the right. He uses ropes to push the swing. A small white dog barks nearby. You can also see statues of puttos, which are small child figures.

This painting has a very interesting history. A man once asked an artist named Gabriel François Doyen to paint it. Doyen did not want to do this frivolous work. He passed the job to Fragonard instead. The man wanted a painting of his mistress on a swing. He even asked for a bishop to push the swing. Fragonard chose to paint a layman instead. Some think the man was Baron de Saint-Julien.

The painting has passed through many hands over the years. It was once owned by Marie-François Ménage de Pressigny. He was a tax farmer who was guillotined in 1794. After that, the revolutionary government took the painting. Later, it belonged to the Duc de Morny. In 1865, Lord Hertford bought it at an auction in Paris. He was the main founder of the Wallace Collection. The painting was not cleaned for over 100 years.

Because it was old, the colors looked dark. A thick, yellow varnish covered the paint. Experts worked to fix this in 2021. They performed sensitive conservation at the Wallace Collection. This helped reverse the aging process. The painting has inspired many other things too. The Disney film Frozen shows a version of it. Even the music video for "Feel My Rhythm" uses it as inspiration.
