The paper tracks a special list called the Nikkei 225. This is a stock market index for the Tokyo Stock Exchange. An index is a way to measure how many stocks are changing. The roots of the Nikkei go back a long time. It started in 1876 as a small weekly bulletin. This first paper was called Chugai Bukka Shimpo. It gave news about the prices of goods. Some people have different ideas about the Nikkei. Some critics say it relies too much on leaks. These are secrets from people inside of companies. Other reporters say the paper is not hard enough on Japanese firms. For example, it did not cover the Olympus scandal right away. A reporter from The New York Times also mentioned the Takata airbag issue. In 2020, police visited the Hong Kong office of the Nikkei.
