John Dowell tells the story. He is the narrator, or the person telling the tale. But John might not be telling the whole truth. Readers call him an unreliable narrator. This means we cannot always trust his words. He tells the story using flashbacks. These are scenes that jump back in time.

The book is about secrets and broken hearts. John and his wife Florence are friends with Edward and Leonora Ashburnham. The characters have many affairs and hidden lives. For example, Florence fakes a heart illness. She does this to keep secrets from John. The story is full of loss. Many characters face death or madness.

This book is very important in literature. In 1998, it was ranked as a top novel. The BBC also called it one of the greatest British novels. People still study it today to find the truth.
