Most fans knew her by her ring name, The Fabulous Moolah. She was a world champion, a promoter, and a trainer. Moolah achieved a level of fame that few women in the industry ever reached. She is recorded as an eight-time women's world champion. Most notably, she holds the record for the longest reigning world champion when combining all her different reigns. Her career spanned several decades and multiple wrestling organizations.

Ellison's path to the ring began with difficult personal circumstances. She was born in 1923 in Kershaw County, South Carolina. She was the youngest of five children. After her mother died of cancer, eight-year-old Lillian worked on a cotton farm to earn money. To help cheer her up, her father took her to local wrestling matches. Seeing the Women's Champion, Mildred Burke, compete changed her life. This moment inspired her to pursue wrestling as a professional career.

Her early career involved several different roles within the industry. She initially worked with promoter Billy Wolfe and his wife, Mildred Burke. In the early 1950s, she served as a valet for "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers. A valet is a person who accompanies a wrestler to the ring to assist them. She later competed as a wrestler herself. In 1956, she won a 13-woman battle royal, which is a match where many competitors fight until only one remains. Following this victory, Vince McMahon, Sr. gave her the name The Fabulous Moolah.

As a champion, Moolah exerted significant influence over the sport. She held the NWA World Women's Championship for 28 years. This long period of dominance made her the most prominent holder of the title. She defended her championship against many top female wrestlers, including Judy Grable and Donna Christanello. Moolah also fought for the rights of female athletes in the United States. In 1972, she helped overturn a ban on women's wrestling in the state of New York. She was also the first woman allowed to wrestle at Madison Square Garden.

In the 1980s, Moolah became part of a major cultural moment in wrestling. She joined the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) as part of the "Rock 'n' Wrestling Connection." This was a storyline that brought wrestling into mainstream culture through music and television. During this era, she feuded with singer Cyndi Lauper and wrestler Wendi Richter. On July 23, 1984, Richter defeated Moolah for the WWF Women's Championship during a live broadcast on MTV.

Moolah continued to break records even in her later years. In 1999, at the age of 76, she won the WWF Women's Championship one final time. This achievement made her the oldest champion in the history of professional wrestling at that time. During this period, she often appeared in comedic roles alongside her longtime friend, Mae Young.

Her longevity in the ring was truly remarkable, as she continued to wrestle into her 70s.

Her professional legacy is complex and viewed through different lenses today. On one hand, she received many honors for her skill and influence. She was the first woman inducted into the WWF Hall of Fame in 1995. She is also a member of the NWA Hall of Fame and the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame.

On the other hand, her reputation was damaged following her death in 2007. Allegations surfaced claiming she had exploited female wrestlers under her tutelage. These reports suggested she used her position to exploit them both financially and sexually. Consequently, her impact on the sport remains a subject of significant discussion.
