The story is set in Ancient Egypt during a very special time. It takes place during the reign of Pharaoh Akhenaten of the 18th Dynasty. Some people say he was the first ruler to believe in only one god.

The story follows a fictional man named Sinuhe.

Sinuhe is a royal physician, which is a doctor for kings. He tells his life story while living in exile by the Red Sea. Sinuhe grew up in the poor part of Thebes. He became a doctor to follow in the footsteps of his adoptive father. Throughout his life, Sinuhe travels to many different lands. He visits places like Babylon, Mitanni, and the Hittite empire. He even travels to the island of Crete.

Waltari worked very hard to make the book feel real.

He spent decades doing research on ancient history. He wanted the life and culture of the period to be accurate. He was fascinated by Egypt since he was 14 years old. This interest started when the tomb of King Tutankhamun was found in 1922. Waltari did not just take notes for his work. Instead, he preferred to learn everything by heart. This helped him write the story smoothly without stopping to check facts.

Many real people from history appear in the novel.

Akhenaten is a main figure who tries to create a new religion. He focuses on the sun god, Aten. His wife is the famous Queen Nefertiti. The book also includes the young King Tutankhamun. Other historical leaders like the Hittite King Suppiluliuma I are mentioned. Even the sculptor Thutmose and the Babylonian king Burna-Buriash II appear. These real names help make the fictional journey feel like a true part of the past.

Writing a book like this connects the past to our own lives.

Waltari used his research to show how people behave. The novel carries a message about human nature. It suggests that people have stayed much the same throughout the ages. Even though the setting is thousands of years old, the feelings are familiar. The book shows how joy, struggle, and change happen in every era. It invites readers to wonder about the people who lived long ago.
