It followed the lives of the Huxtable family in Brooklyn, New York. The family was upper middle-class and African-American. The father, Cliff Huxtable, worked as an obstetrician. The mother, Clair Huxtable, worked as a lawyer. They had five children named Sondra, Denise, Theo, Vanessa, and Rudy.

The show was important because it showed a stable and successful Black family. This helped change how people saw Black families on television.

Creating the show involved many careful steps. Bill Cosby originally wanted the parents to have blue-collar jobs. He thought the father should drive a limousine. His wife, Camille, suggested they be well-off instead. This led to the doctor and lawyer roles we see. Cosby also wanted the show to be educational. He insisted the show be filmed in New York City. Most other shows at that time were filmed in Los Angeles. The show used a theme song called "Kiss Me." This song was based on a track Cosby made in 1974.

The series began on September 20, 1984. It aired on the NBC network for eight seasons. It ran until April 30, 1992. During this time, it produced 201 half-hour episodes. The show was so popular that it stayed at number one for five years. This is a rare feat in television history. It was one of only two sitcoms to ever do this. The show even became a huge hit in Europe. It helped make the lead actors very famous around the world.

Many specific details made the show feel real. The Huxtable home was a brownstone in Manhattan. The show used a real building located at 10 St. Luke's Place.

In the early episodes, the father's name was Clifford. Later, the name was changed to Heathcliff. The show also included serious topics like dyslexia. This was inspired by Cosby's own son, Ennis. The show even featured famous jazz musicians and artists. This helped promote African-American culture to many viewers.

The show's impact can still be seen today. It led to other shows with Black casts, like The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It also had a spin-off called A Different World. This new show ran for six seasons and 144 episodes. Some people remember the "Clair Huxtable effect" on TV mothers. Even Cliff's colorful sweaters became a fashion trend. However, the show's legacy changed after 2014. Reruns were removed from networks because of sexual assault cases involving Bill Cosby. This has made the show's history a complicated subject.
