The Texas Revolution was a major rebellion that lasted from October 1835 to April 1836.

It was fought by two groups of people living in the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. These people were Anglo-American immigrants known as Texians and Hispanic Texans known as Tejanos. They rose up against the centralist government of Mexico. This government was led by President Antonio López de Santa Anna. The fighting eventually led to the birth of the Republic of Texas. This new nation existed until it joined the United States about ten years later.

Many different things caused this conflict to happen. For ten years, there were political and cultural clashes between settlers and the Mexican government. The government in Mexico began to take more power for itself. This meant that the rights of people living in Texas were reduced. One big issue was the law regarding immigration from the United States. Another major cause was the issue of slavery. Mexico had officially abolished slavery in Texas in 1829. However, many Texian settlers wanted to keep slavery in their territory.

The revolution moved through several stages of fighting and politics. In October 1835, the uprising began after years of tension. At first, Texians and volunteers from the United States defeated small groups of Mexican soldiers. However, the new Texian government struggled with infighting and poor planning. In March 1836, a second convention declared independence for Texas.

President Santa Anna wanted to retake the land. His Army of Operations entered Texas in mid-February 1836. The Texians were not ready for this large force.

There were several famous and difficult battles during the war. General José de Urrea led troops up the coast during the Goliad Campaign. He defeated Texian troops and executed many who had surrendered.

Later, Santa Anna led his army to the Alamo in San Antonio de Béxar. In the Battle of the Alamo, almost all the defenders were killed.

His men had to flee from the Mexican army in a movement called the Runaway Scrape.

The war ended with a sudden and decisive victory for the Texans. On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston led a surprise attack at the Battle of San Jacinto.

The Mexican troops were quickly defeated. Santa Anna was taken hostage by the Texian forces. To save his life, he ordered his army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. The Texans made him sign the Treaty of Velasco. This treaty gave Texas its independence from Mexico.
