The Republic of Texas was a short-lived country in North America. It existed from March 2, 1836, until February 19, 1846.

This country was located between many different lands. To the west and southwest, it shared a border with Mexico. To the southeast, it sat next to the Gulf of Mexico. To the east and northeast, it touched the U.S. states of Louisiana and Arkansas. To the north, it touched lands that are now Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming.

Many things led to the birth of this republic. Long before, Spain claimed the land and built missions.

Later, the land became part of Mexico after it gained independence from Spain. Many settlers from the United States moved into the area. These people were called Texians. People of Mexican descent in the area were called Tejanos.

Tensions grew between the settlers and the Mexican government. They had many disagreements about laws and the use of slavery. In 1830, the Mexican government even outlawed more American immigration to the area.

Conflict eventually turned into a revolution. The fighting began on October 2, 1835. This happened shortly after President Antonio López de Santa Anna adopted a new constitution. This new set of laws gave more power to a central government. On March 2, 1836, leaders met and signed the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The major fighting ended on April 21, 1836. This happened because of the Treaties of Velasco. These treaties ended the war and helped secure independence for Texas.

Life as a republic was quite complex. Texas had to deal with many different neighbors. European powers like France and Britain were slow to recognize Texas. They did not want to upset their relations with Mexico. Eventually, they did recognize the republic and began trading with it.

Much of the land was still being disputed. Mexico did not recognize the independence of Texas. They viewed the land as a rebellious province instead. Some parts of the land were also controlled by the Comancheria.

Texas did not stay a separate country forever. The United States wanted to add the land to its own territory. Texas was annexed by the United States on December 29, 1845. This made Texas the 28th state in the Union.

The formal transfer of power happened on February 19, 1846. However, this change caused new problems. The United States inherited border disputes with Mexico. Because Mexico would not accept the new borders, the Mexican-American War began. This shows how the history of one land connects to many others.
