At age eleven, he joined the club HC Alkmaar. He was selected for the Dutch under-16 team just two years later. By age fifteen, he made his debut in the senior men's league with HC Alkmaar. Two years after that, he moved to the elite league with HC Bloemendaal. This progression shows his rapid rise through the ranks of Dutch hockey.

Throughout his career, De Nooijer has worn a very significant number. He initially wore the number 11 shirt during his first two seasons. Later, he switched to the number 14. This specific number was made famous by the legendary Johan Cruijff. De Nooijer has worn number 14 for both his clubs and his country. The number is so closely linked to him that a signature hockey stick was named the Dita Giga #14. This stick carries his legacy into the equipment used by other players.

His international career with the Netherlands is defined by massive numbers. He made his official debut on 4 June 1994 against New Zealand. De Nooijer eventually played over three hundred international matches for his country. On 4 April 2007, he earned his 350th cap during a match against Belgium. The Dutch team won that specific friendly match with a score of 7–3 in Boxtel. Later, on 15 August 2009, he reached his 400th cap in a 5–3 victory against India.

De Nooijer has achieved many historic milestones in major tournaments. In 1998, he played in the Hockey World Cup held in Utrecht. He scored the decisive golden goal in the final against Spain to win the cup. He also played briefly in Germany for the club Harvestehuder THC after that tournament. In 2006, he was a key factor in the Champions Trophy final. That victory gave the Netherlands an eighth crown, which equaled a record. For De Nooijer personally, this was his sixth Champions Trophy title.

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has honored him many times. De Nooijer was named the World Hockey Player of the Year in 2003, 2005, and 2006. Jacques Rogge presented these awards to him. By winning three times, De Nooijer set a new record for the most awards. His former teammate, Stephan Veen, had previously won the award twice in 1998 and 2000. Another player, Jamie Dwyer, eventually matched De Nooijer's record of three wins in 2009. Dwyer later surpassed this by winning the award again in 2010.

De Nooijer's influence extends to professional leagues around the world. He was signed by the Uttar Pradesh Wizards in the Hockey India League. Upon joining them, he became the highest-paid player in that league. This move demonstrates his global status as a premier athlete. Even as his playing career evolved, his connection to the sport remained strong. He currently plays for the Dutch side HC Bloemendaal.
