Tetsuji Takechi was a famous Japanese director, writer, and critic. He spent his life changing how people saw theater and movies. He was born in Osaka on December 10, 1912. His family was quite wealthy because his father was an industrialist.

Takechi first became well known for his deep thoughts on theater. In 1939, he started a journal called Stage Review. He used this journal to share his ideas with others. Later, he turned these writings into books. He wanted to help people understand the art of performing.

After World War II, Takechi wanted to save traditional Japanese theater. At that time, many people were not interested in kabuki. Even the government had briefly banned it. Takechi started a group called the Takechi Kabuki in 1945. He used his own money to make these shows happen. He brought new energy to old stories. He did this by mixing different styles together. He combined kabuki with noh and modern dance.

This helped people in the Kansai region fall in love with kabuki again. One famous star of his group was Nakamura Ganjiro III. This time in theater was even called the "Age of Senjaku" to honor him.

Takechi did not stop with kabuki. He also worked with kyōgen, which are funny plays. In 1953, he directed a play called Susugigawa. This was the first new kyōgen play in a hundred years. He also worked on a play called Yūzuru. A composer named Ikuma Dan wrote music for it. Dan mixed traditional singing with a Western orchestra.

Takechi even tried to bring new ideas to noh theater. He worked with an experimental group called Jikken Kōbō. He directed a version of a famous work called Pierrot Lunaire in 1955. His bold ideas sometimes made people in the theater world very upset. Some leaders even threatened to kick actors out for working with him.

In the 1960s, Takechi moved into the world of film. He began making a type of movie called a pink film. These were independent films that showed adult themes. In 1964, he made a big-budget movie called Daydream. It was based on a story by Jun'ichirō Tanizaki. The movie was a black comedy about an artist.

This film was very important because it was a mainstream pink film. However, his work with these films led to a big fight with the government. In 1965, after his film Black Snow, the government arrested him. They charged him with indecency because of his film choices.

Takechi fought a long legal battle against the government's censorship. He actually won his lawsuit in court. This victory was very important for many other filmmakers. It allowed a wave of pink films to be made in Japan. Because of this, people gave him special titles. Some call him "The Father of Pink." Others call him "The Father of Japanese Porn."

Even though many people do not know his name today, his work changed things. He left a lasting mark on both the stage and the screen. His ideas helped shape the future of Japanese art for many years.
