He lived in the Roman province of Africa a long time ago. Most historians believe he lived between 155 and 220 AD. He was a highly educated man with a strong writing style. His words were often full of passion and bright imagery. Some people believe he was a trained lawyer. Others thought he was an ordained priest. Even though we do not know everything about his life, his books tell us much about his time.

Tertullian was a pioneer for many Christian ideas. He was the first person to write a large amount of Christian books in Latin. Because of this, people call him the father of Latin Christianity. He is also known as the founder of Western theology. One of his most famous jobs was using the word "trinity." This word helps people describe the relationship between the Father, the Son, and the Spirit. He used this term to explain how God works. He also created new ways of thinking about religious rules and beliefs.

His writing often served as a defense for his faith. He wrote many books to answer people who disagreed with Christian beliefs. For example, he wrote against a group called the Gnostics. He also wrote to Roman leaders to ask for fair trials. He argued that people should have the right to practice their own religion. He even defended Christians against mean rumors. He showed that Christians did not commit crimes like murder or theft. He argued that they were actually very disciplined people.

We have about thirty-one of his books today. Some of his other works were lost over hundreds of years. For instance, some books disappeared as recently as the 9th century. Most of the copies we have were made in the 15th century. These books cover many topics like morals and how to live a good life. He also wrote about how to be a good citizen. He used the word "pagan" to mean a civilian. He believed Christians should act like soldiers for their faith.

Tertullian's ideas changed how people thought about God. He taught that the Father is the ultimate creator of everything. He believed the Son was part of the Father's substance. However, some of his specific ideas were not accepted later. For example, the Catholic Church rejected his view that the Son was lower than the Father. Even with these disagreements, he was a teacher to many famous thinkers. He helped prepare the way for leaders like Cyprian and Augustine. His work remains a huge part of history for everyone to study.
