Terry Riley is a pioneering American composer and performing musician. He is widely recognized as a leader of the minimalist school of composition. Minimalism is a style of music that focuses on repetition and gradual change. Riley's work is unique because it blends many different traditions. He combines American minimalism with Indian classical raga and modal jazz. His music often features shifting structures and epic improvisations. This approach changed how people think about classical music.

Riley uses specific techniques to create his complex soundscapes. One method involves improvising through a series of modal figures. These are musical patterns of different lengths that repeat. He also uses improvisation, which is the act of creating music in the moment. Another major tool is the use of tape delay systems. In the 1950s, he worked with tape loops, which are continuous loops of recorded sound. He even created a "time-lag accumulator" with a sound engineer. This device allowed him to manipulate sounds through delay and repetition.

His composition "In C" provides a perfect example of his musical mechanism. This landmark piece from 1964 consists of 53 separate modules. Each module is roughly one measure long and contains a unique musical pattern. Despite these different patterns, every module is in the key of C. To keep the music organized, one performer beats a steady pulse of Cs on a piano. Other performers can play any number of instruments. They follow loose guidelines to perform the modules. This causes the different musical patterns to interlock in various ways as time passes.

Riley's musical education began in California during the 1950s. He was born in Colfax on June 24, 1935, and raised in Redding. He studied composition and solo piano at several institutions. These included San Francisco State University, the San Francisco Conservatory, and the University of California, Berkeley. During this time, he studied under teachers like Seymour Shifrin and Robert Erickson. He also befriended composer La Monte Young. Together, they performed an improvisatory piece for two pianists and tape recorders in 1959 and 1960.

His style was deeply shaped by his studies with Pandit Pran Nath. This master of Indian classical voice was a very influential teacher. Riley began intensive studies with him in 1970. To learn more, Riley made numerous trips to India. He studied how to accompany the singer on the tabla and the tambura. He even joined the faculty at Mills College in 1971 to teach Indian classical music. He also drew inspiration from jazz legends like John Coltrane and Miles Davis. He viewed musicians like Art Tatum and Bill Evans as his piano heroes.

Riley's influence extends into many different genres of music. His 1969 album, "A Rainbow in Curved Air," is a landmark of electronic music. This album inspired many later developments in the field. For example, Pete Townshend used similar organ parts in songs by The Who. The English progressive rock group Curved Air even took its name from this album. His work also touched the world of rock music. He is credited with inspiring John Cale's keyboard parts in The Velvet Underground's music. Even Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells" was inspired by Riley's example.

Throughout his career, Riley has maintained many important musical connections. He has a long-lasting association with the Kronos Quartet. He met their founder, David Harrington, while at Mills College. Riley has composed 13 different string quartets specifically for this ensemble. He also collaborates frequently with his son, the guitarist Gyan Riley. His work continues to bridge different worlds. He connects the precision of classical music with the freedom of jazz and the spiritual depth of Indian raga. Today, he continues to perform as both a solo pianist and an Indian raga vocalist.
