It sits in the Umbria region near the border of Lazio. The city is located on a plain by the Nera River. Its name means "between-two-rivers." This refers to where the Nera and the Serra stream meet.

Nearby, you can see the Cascata delle Marmore. This is the tallest man-made waterfall in the entire world. It was created by Romans to move water from a valley.

The city has a very strong industrial history. People often call it "The Steel City." This is because of its many large factories. In the 1800s, steel mills were brought to the area. These mills helped Italy grow during the Second Industrial Revolution. Today, the city still has three main industrial hubs. One area makes stainless steel. Another area is known as the "Area Polymer" for chemical work. A third hub focuses on renewable energy and clean technology.

Terni has been a home for people for a very long time. The Umbrian people lived there around the 7th century BC. Later, the Romans conquered the area in the 3rd century BC. They called the town Interamna. The city grew and even had its own walls in the 1300s. In the 1500s, an ironwork called the Ferriera began. This helped start the city's tradition of making metal goods. The city later became part of the Papal States.

Life in Terni has seen many big changes. During World War II, the city was a target for bombers. This was because the factories were so important to the war. On August 11, 1943, a large raid caused much damage. Many buildings were destroyed or hurt by the bombs. Sadly, many people lost their lives during these attacks. However, the city grew quickly again after the war ended. It remains an important center for industry and transport today.

There are many special things to see in Terni. You can visit the Terni Cathedral, which has beautiful Baroque lines.

This 16th-century building is now the town hall. The city is also called the "City of Lovers." This is because Saint Valentine was a bishop there. You can visit his remains in a special basilica-sanctuary.
