She was a nun who loved to pray. She also wrote many books. One book used a castle to explain the soul.

In her books, she described how people connect with God. She wrote about four stages of prayer.

Teresa wanted to change how some nuns lived. She felt some convents were too busy. She wanted them to focus more on prayer.

She started a new group of nuns. They lived with very little money. This group was called the Discalced Carmelites. She also worked with a man named John of the Cross. Together, they helped men join this new way of life.

Teresa traveled many miles to start new homes. She founded many convents across Spain. This work was not always easy. Some people did not like her new rules. She even faced a trial by the Inquisition. But she kept going. In 1622, the Pope made her a saint. Later, she became the first female Doctor of the Church. This title shows how much people value her ideas.
