Math often involves finding rules that always stay the same. Tao looks for these rules in many different places. For example, he worked on a puzzle about prime numbers. Prime numbers are special numbers that can only be divided by one and themselves. Together with Ben Green, he proved the Green–Tao theorem. This theorem shows that prime numbers can form long, steady patterns. He also studied the Collatz conjecture, which is a famous math mystery. He used math to show how most numbers behave in that puzzle. 
Tao's journey with math started when he was very young. He was born in Australia to parents who moved from Hong Kong. His father was a doctor and his mother taught math and physics.

By October 2015, he had reached a total of 68 co-authors. This teamwork allows him to tackle incredibly complex problems that require multiple perspectives. One famous example is his work with British mathematician Ben J. Green. Together, they proved the Green–Tao theorem. This theorem demonstrates that there are arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions within the sequence of prime numbers. An arithmetic progression is a sequence where the difference between any two consecutive terms is constant.
His research often targets famous mathematical conjectures or unsolved problems. In 2015, he resolved the Erdős discrepancy problem using entropy estimates within analytic number theory. He also made significant progress on the Collatz conjecture in 2019. In that work, he proved a probabilistic claim regarding Collatz orbits. He also worked on the Navier–Stokes existence and smoothness Millennium Problem. Specifically, he constructed a variant of these equations that shows irregular behavior in finite time. This discovery helped clarify the specific nonlinear structures that must be addressed to solve the original problem. 
Tao has also contributed heavily to the field of harmonic analysis. He resolved the Fuglede conjecture for dimensions greater than five. He achieved this by constructing an elementary counterexample in the setting of finite groups. Additionally, he worked with Camil Muscalu and Christoph Thiele on multilinear singular integral operators. This work unified and extended earlier results from mathematicians like Ronald Coifman and Yves Meyer. His work on dispersive partial differential equations is also extensive. Between 2001 and 2010, he collaborated with several mathematicians, including James Colliander and Markus Keel. They produced novel results regarding Schrödinger equations and KdV-type equations.
His journey toward these achievements began with an extraordinary childhood. Tao was born in Australia to Chinese immigrant parents. His father, Billy Tao, was a pediatrician from Shanghai. His mother, Grace Leong, was a mathematics and physics teacher. 
His academic career moved at a remarkably rapid pace. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from Flinders University at age 16. In 1992, he received a Fulbright Scholarship to study at Princeton University. He completed his PhD at the age of 21 under the direction of Elias Stein. In 1999, at only 24 years old, he was promoted to full professor at UCLA. This made him the youngest person ever to reach that rank at the institution. 
Because of his massive contributions, Tao has received the highest honors in science. In 2006, he was awarded the Fields Medal, which is often described as the highest honor in mathematics. He was the first Australian and one of the youngest recipients of this medal. He also won the MacArthur Fellowship, the Royal Medal, and the Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics in 2014. In 2021, President Joe Biden selected him for the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. His influence is felt globally through his many memberships in prestigious academies. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His work continues to link different mathematical systems together, creating a deeper understanding of the patterns that govern our world.
