You hit a hollow rubber ball over a net. You can play one person against another. This is called singles. You can also play with two people on each team. This is called doubles. The goal is to move the ball well. You want your opponent to miss the ball. If they miss, you score a point.

Tennis has a long history. It began in France in the 12th century. Back then, people hit the ball with their hands. This was called jeu de paume, or "game of the palm."
