It is made from whole soybeans. People on the island of Java have eaten it for a long time. It is a main source of protein for them.

Making tempeh uses a natural way to change the beans. A tiny fungus called Rhizopus is added to the soybeans. This fungus grows into a white mat called mycelium. The white mat binds the beans into a firm cake.

Some makers still use leaves to wrap the food. They might use banana leaves or teak leaves. These leaves help the fungus grow well.

Tempeh has a firm feel and a nutty taste. The flavor can get stronger as it gets older. It is full of vitamins and fiber. People in many parts of the world love to eat it now.
