Rhizopus is a group of fungi. These fungi grow on many things. They live on bread and fruit. You can find them on peanuts and leather too.

They grow using long, branching parts. These parts are called hyphae. Some species can make people sick. This can lead to a disease called mucormycosis.

Rhizopus has many ways to make more of itself. It can make asexual spores. These spores grow inside a round part called a sporangium. This part sits on a long stalk. The stalk is called a sporangiophore. The stalks grow from root-like parts called rhizoids.

They can also make spores through sexual reproduction. This happens when two parts join together. They make a dark zygospore. This zygospore grows into new colonies. These new colonies are different from the parents. Some Rhizopus help us. One type helps make a food called tempeh. Another type helps make drinks in Asia and Africa. They also help the soil by breaking down toxins.
