Teiidae is a family of lizards found in the Americas. You might know them as whiptails or racerunners. Some members of this group are called tegus. There are about 150 different species in this family. They belong to a large group of lizards called Teiioidea. This group also includes a sister family called Gymnopthalmidae. These lizards are very important for understanding how different species live and grow.

These lizards have very specific bodies that help them move. They have large, rectangular scales on their bellies. Their backs are covered in much smaller, grainy scales. All teiids have a forked tongue, much like a snake. They also have strong limbs for running on land. Most teiids are diurnal, which means they are active during the day. They are mostly carnivores that eat insects and other meat.

Some whiptail lizards have a very unusual way of having babies. These specific species are entirely female. They use a method called parthenogenesis, which is a way to reproduce without males. This means the babies are clones of the mother. In some cases, two females perform pseudocopulation to help them stay fertile. This is a behavior where one female acts like a male. It is a very interesting way for life to continue.

Scientists have found clues about these lizards in the fossil record. The earliest known crown-group teiid is named Lumbrerasaurus. This lizard lived in Argentina during the Early Eocene period. Fossils also show that some teiids once lived in Europe. They might have traveled across the ocean on floating plants. This is called an oceanic dispersal event. It is a rare way for animals to move between continents.

Today, the Teiidae family is divided into two main groups. These are the subfamilies Teiinae and Tupinambinae. The Teiinae group includes many North American whiptails. The Tupinambinae group includes tegus and caiman lizards. There are 18 different genera, or groups, within the family. Scientists use many different names to describe these species. This helps them keep track of all the different types of lizards.
