These lizards live in the southwestern United States. You can find them in Arizona and New Mexico. They also live in Chihuahua in northern Mexico. This lizard is part of the genus Aspidoscelis. It is a unique member of the reptile world. Many people find its way of life quite amazing.

This lizard has a strange way of making babies. It uses a process called parthenogenesis. This means they can have young without any males. The species is made of only females. They can be created through a mix of two other species. One parent is the little striped whiptail. The other parent is the western whiptail. This mix prevents healthy males from forming.

Learning about these lizards helps us see how nature works. The western whiptail lives in the desert. The little striped whiptail likes the grasslands. When they mix, they create the New Mexico whiptail. This is a reproductive strategy used by several whiptail species. In the summer, a female may lay up to four unfertilized eggs. These eggs hatch in about eight weeks.

Females may even act like they are mating with each other. This behavior may help stimulate ovulation so they lay eggs.

There are many facts about how they look and act. They are usually brown or black in color. Seven pale yellow stripes run from their head to their tail. They often have light colored spots between these stripes. Their undersides are white or pale blue. Their throats can be blue or blue-green.
