These reptiles live in the subtropical forests of southern China and Southeast Asia. They prefer places with thick trees and clean, flowing streams. They are diurnal, which means they are most active during the daylight hours. These lizards are also semi-arboreal. This means they spend a lot of their time up in the trees.

They often sleep on branches that hang over the water. This gives them a quick way to escape if they feel unsafe.

Finding food is a big part of their daily life. They are omnivores, so they eat both plants and animals. Most of their meals consist of insects like ants, crickets, and termites. They also eat things like worms, snails, and even small vertebrates.

If a lizard feels threatened, it has a clever way to stay safe. It can leap or run straight into the nearest stream. Once in the water, they can stay submerged for up to 90 minutes. This helps them hide from predators until the danger passes.

Scientists first described this species in 1829. A man named Georges Cuvier gave them their scientific name.

Long ago, other types of lizards were put in this same group. However, researchers later moved those other lizards into different groups. Now, the Chinese water dragon is the only species left in its genus. This lizard is also a close relative of the Australian water dragon. Some studies suggest these two groups split apart about 30 million years ago.

These lizards have many unique physical features. Males are much larger and heavier than females.

A male can weigh up to 0.6 kg or 1.3 lbs. They have special crests on their necks and jowls on their cheeks. Their tails are very long, often making up 70% of their total length. Most of them are a bright green color. However, they can turn brown or grey if they feel stressed. Young lizards even have bright turquoise stripes on their bodies.

Today, many Chinese water dragons are facing hard times. They are listed as a Vulnerable species by the IUCN. This means they are at risk of disappearing in the future. One big problem is overharvesting for meat and the pet trade. People catch them to sell as pets in many different countries.

Another problem is habitat loss. When forests are cut down for farms, the lizards lose their homes. Protecting their streams and trees is very important for their survival.
