Technical drawing, also known as drafting, is a specialized discipline used to communicate how objects function or are constructed.

Unlike expressive art, which allows for subjective interpretation, technical drawings are designed to have one intended meaning. This precision is essential for communication within the fields of industry and engineering. To prevent confusion, drafters use a visual language consisting of specific symbols, perspectives, and notation systems. Many of these principles are codified in international standards, such as ISO 128. These standards ensure that a drawing created in one part of the world can be understood by a manufacturer in another.

The process of drafting can begin with a simple sketch. A sketch is a quickly executed, freehand drawing used to record an idea for later use. Architects often use these sketches as a way to try out different design ideas or compositions.

These sketches act as a tool for design collaboration, helping to summarize complex patterns before a more expensive, finished work is produced. Once a design moves past the sketching stage, it requires the precision of formal drafting tools and methods.

Traditional manual drafting requires a highly organized workspace and specific instruments. A drafter typically places paper on a smooth drawing board with right-angle corners. They use a sliding straightedge called a T-square to draw parallel lines.

By placing triangles or set squares on the T-square, the drafter can draw lines at any chosen angle. To create curves and circles, they rely on tools like compasses and French curves. A spline, which is a rubber-coated metal that can be bent, is also used for specific curves.

Drafters may also use templates to quickly reproduce recurring symbols without drawing them from scratch.

To increase efficiency, many professionals used a mechanical drafting machine. This device is an application of the pantograph, a tool used to scale or move lines accurately.

The machine allows a drafter to maintain a perfect right angle at any point on the page. This reduces the need to constantly move triangles and speeds up the drawing process. Even with these tools, the work demands a high level of skill. A drafter must possess a deep understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and spatial comprehension to ensure every detail is accurate.

Modern drafting has been transformed by computer-aided design, or CAD systems.

There are two primary types of CAD: two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D). A 2D CAD system acts as an electronic drawing board. Its greatest advantage over manual drafting is the ease of making revisions. In the past, a mistake in a hand-drawn plan often required starting from scratch. With 2D CAD, a user can simply modify the digital file. However, 2D systems cannot check if different components will physically fit together.

3D CAD systems, such as SolidWorks or Autodesk Inventor, offer much more complexity. These systems allow users to produce the geometry of a part first.

The technical drawing is then generated from specific views of that 3D model. This method eliminates errors in the production of views, such as orthographic or sectioned views. 3D CAD is vital for assembling individual parts digitally to represent a final product. This allows engineers to model and check buildings, aircraft, and cars before they are ever manufactured.

Technical drawing is applied across many different professional disciplines. Architects use detail drawings and "plans" to document the design of buildings.

Engineering drawings focus on mechanical items, such as manufactured parts and equipment. The goal is to capture all geometric features so a manufacturer can produce the component exactly as intended. Even software engineering uses diagrams to help teams analyze requirements and communicate conceptual models. Finally, technical illustration uses these principles to explain complex items to non-technical audiences through images like cutaway drawings.
