Technical communication

technology Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Technical communication is a way to share specialized facts. It focuses on topics like science, engineering, or new technology.

This field helps people understand how things work. It can involve writing, making drawings, or giving spoken presentations. Many people do this work in professional settings. Some people have this as their main job. These people are called technical communicators or technical writers. Other professionals, like engineers, do this work as part of their regular tasks. The main goal is to make information easy to find and use.

To do this job well, people follow a specific way of working. This process is often based on six steps. First, they decide on the purpose and the audience. They must know who will use the information. Next, they collect facts through research. This is called invention. Then, they organize these facts into a clear plan. This step is called arrangement. After that, they write a first draft, which is called style. They then revise and edit the work to make it better. This part is called memory. Finally, they publish the finished work, which is called delivery.

This profession has changed a lot over the last fifty years. It has grown alongside new technology and the global economy.

Today, many experts focus on User Experience, or UX design. UX design looks at how a person feels when using a product. It includes things like the layout, the sounds, and the visual design. Technical communicators do not just write words anymore. They now design the whole experience around the content. They must think about how information looks on phones, apps, and social media. This helps users feel comfortable while they learn.

There are many different jobs within this field. Some people are called API writers or e-learning authors. Others work as technical illustrators or technical translators. You might also find information architects or usability experts. Some people even work as digital strategists or content managers. These professionals work with subject-matter experts to get the right details. They might create user manuals, training guides, or even patents. They also make videos and digital files to help people. In 2015, the European Association for Technical Communication published a guide for these skills.

Technical communication connects to many things you see every day. When you read a guide to build a toy, you are using it. When you use a new app, the buttons and menus are designed for you. It is like a bridge between experts and the rest of the world. It helps people use tools safely and effectively. It even includes "tactical" communication. This is when everyday people share fixes and tips in online communities. Whether it is a big government document or a quick tip online, it all helps us understand our world.
