Teófilo Stevenson was a legendary amateur boxer from Cuba. He was known for his incredible skill and strength in the heavyweight division. Many people loved him because he was a hero to his country. He was famous for using a very fast jab, which is a quick, straight punch. This specific move helped him win many important fights against top opponents. He is one of only three boxers in history to win three Olympic gold medals.

Stevenson's journey in boxing began when he was just nine years old. He practiced at an open-air gym that his father used to visit. His father, Teófilo senior, was an immigrant from Saint Vincent. Under the guidance of a coach named John Herrera, the young boxer began fighting people with much more experience. He later worked with coaches like Andrei Chervonenko and Alcides Sagarra to improve his skills. They helped him master his jab to make it a winning weapon.

His career reached new heights during the 1972 Munich Olympics. In a very famous fight, he faced the American boxer Duane Bobick. Although Bobick had beaten him before, Stevenson won by knocking him down three times in the third round. This performance was watched by many people on television in Cuba. He went on to win his first gold medal in that tournament. This victory helped establish Cuba as a very strong nation in amateur boxing.

Stevenson continued to win major titles throughout the 1970s and 1980s. He won gold medals in the 1976 Montreal Olympics and the 1980 Moscow Olympics. In 1982, he competed at the World Amateur Boxing Championships in Munich. He also won the super heavyweight gold at the 1984 Friendship Games. Even though he faced losses, such as a match against Igor Vysotsky, he remained a top contender. He eventually retired from the sport after the 1988 Olympics.

One of the most interesting parts of his life was his choice to stay an amateur. An American group once offered him five million dollars to fight Muhammad Ali. This would have made him a professional boxer. Instead, Stevenson chose to stay in Cuba to represent his people. He famously asked what one million dollars was worth compared to the love of eight million Cubans. This decision showed how much he valued his home and his fans.
