People often visit to enjoy alcoholic beverages and meals like roast meats or cheese. Historically, many taverns also acted as inns. An inn is a special kind of tavern with a license to provide lodging for travelers. This means guests could sleep there during their long journeys.

In England, these places are often called pubs, which is short for public houses. They have served as important spots for meeting people for many centuries.

Inside a tavern, the way things work depends on the local culture. In the past, an English tavern might have two main parts. One part was the bar for eating and drinking. The other part was the sleeping quarters for guests.

Many taverns even use a special sign with a symbol to attract customers. This sign lets people know the shop sells alcohol. In some places, like the Mermaid Tavern in London, people used a clever system. They used small metal tokens as an early form of a bar tab. You would trade money for tokens when you first arrived. Then, you used those tokens to pay for drinks throughout the night.

History shows that taverns have always been at the center of life. In France, taverns were main places to dine out starting in the 14th century. They served simple foods like bread, herring, and bacon.
