The name Tarumanagara means the kingdom of Taruma. This name is etymologically connected to the Citarum River. In the Sundanese language, "ci" means water or river. "Tarum" is the local name for the indigo plant. This plant was used to create blue dyeing pigment. The kingdom was a vital part of the early history of Java.

The kingdom held a very strategic geographical position. It was located near the coast of western Java. This area allowed it to control the Sunda Strait. Such a position connected the region to Sumatra. It also linked the archipelago to India and China.

Because of this, Tarumanagara maintained extended trade and diplomatic relations. Chinese chronicles from the Sui and Tang dynasties record these connections. The kingdom was a key player in the maritime networks of the time.

We learn about Tarumanagara through stone inscriptions called prasasti. These inscriptions are the earliest known records of Hinduism in western Java. One famous example is the Ciaruteun inscription found near the Ciaruteun river.

It was written in the Sanskrit language using Vengi letters. Another important find is the Kebon Kopi I inscription. This stone features engravings of two large elephant footprints. The text compares these prints to the elephant Airavata. Airavata was the elephant used by the god Indra. These stones prove the existence of powerful rulers.

King Purnawarman was the most famous ruler of Tarumanagara. He lived during the 5th century and produced many inscriptions. He was a leader who associated himself with the god Vishnu.

The Jambu inscription describes him as a peerless king. It says he faithfully executed his duties. The text also claims his armor could not be pierced by enemy arrows. Purnawarman was also a builder of great infrastructure. According to the Tugu inscription, he built a canal. This canal changed the course of the Cakung River. This project helped drain coastal areas for agriculture and settlement.

Later kings continued the dynasty, often using the name suffix "warman." In Sanskrit, "varman" means shield or protector.

King Suryawarman ruled from 535 to 561 CE. He established a new capital city further east. This move left the community of Sundapura behind. After him, King Kertawarman ruled from approximately 561 to 628 CE. Later, King Linggawarman ruled from 628 to 650 CE. Linggawarman did not have a male heir to succeed him. This lack of a direct male successor led to significant changes in leadership.

The economy of Tarumanagara was diverse and active. The population engaged in hunting, mining, fishing, and shipping.

They traded specific hunting products like rhino horns, ivory, and turtle shells. The existence of gold and silver trade suggests an active mining sector. Agriculture was also very important to the kingdom. The construction of canals allowed for large irrigated rice paddies. These hydraulic projects also helped manage water to prevent flooding. This shows a high level of engineering and organization.

Religion played a major role in the life of the kingdom. The population practiced several different faiths. The Chinese monk Fa Xian visited in the early 5th century. He reported that Hinduism flourished in the region.

Buddhism was also present during his stay. The kingdom eventually faced a period of decline. Around 686 CE, the Srivijaya kingdom launched a military expedition. Srivijaya was centered in modern-day Palembang. This invasion likely contributed to the end of Tarumanagara's dominance. King Tarusbawa eventually moved the capital inland to find refuge. This new location later became the city of Pakuan Pajajaran.
