Its people were primarily ethnic Sundanese. Most inhabitants practiced Hinduism. The kingdom was a major center for trade and culture in the region. Its influence was so lasting that the Sunda Strait bears its name.

The name "Sunda" has several possible origins rooted in Sanskrit. One theory suggests it comes from the prefix "su-", meaning goodness or quality. This is similar to the word "suvarna," which means good color or gold. Another scholar, the Dutch geologist Reinout Willem van Bemmelen, suggested it derived from "Shuddha," meaning white or pure. The term can represent brightness, light, and cleanliness. In Hindu mythology, Sunda is also the name of one of the powerful Asura brothers.

Throughout its history, the kingdom's administration and capital shifted locations. The seat of power moved between the Galuh area in the east and Pakuan Pajajaran in the west. This movement shows how the kingdom adapted to different regions. By the 10th century, the name Sunda was used by foreigners to identify western Java. This included Indian explorers and Malay Srivijayan traders. The Juru Pangambat inscription from 932 CE confirms this early usage.

We learn about this civilization through several types of historical records. Stone inscriptions, or prasasti, provide direct evidence from the time. These include the Jayabupati inscription from 1030 CE and the Batutulis inscription from 1533. Copperplate letters from the 15th century also detail royal instructions and sacred lands. Additionally, manuscripts offer deep insights into culture. The Bujangga Manik manuscript describes the travels of a Hindu prince. It provides details on place names and customs during the late 15th century.

The legacy of the Sunda Kingdom remains visible in many ways. Even though the kingdom fell in the late 16th century, its culture persists. The Sundanese people keep their history alive through the Pantun oral tradition. This involves chanting poetic verses about the golden age of Pajajaran. Physical remnants also exist, such as the 7th-century Bojongmenje Hindu temple.
