Tampere is also the most populous inland city in the Nordic countries. It is wedged between two large lakes. These are Lake Näsijärvi and Lake Pyhäjärvi. The Tammerkoski rapids connect these two bodies of water. These rapids have provided a vital source of power throughout history. Today, they are still used for generating electricity.

The geography of the city is defined by the Tammerkoski rapids. These rapids exist because there is a difference in water level between the two lakes. This physical feature shaped the development of the entire region. The name Tampere is believed to derive from these rapids. Linguist Ánte Aikio suggests the name comes from a Proto-Samic term. This term means a "deep, slow part of a stream" and "rapids." Other theories exist regarding the name's origin. Some suggest it comes from the Swedish word for a milldam. Others link it to ancient Scandinavian words describing a swollen shape.

Tampere has a long history of human settlement. The earliest known permanent settlements appeared around the 7th century. These settlers farmed the land in areas like Takahuhti. By the 16th century, villages like Messukylä and Takahuhti were the largest settlements.

Markets were held in the Pispala area for many centuries. In 1771, a pastor named Erik Edner proposed a new town. King Gustav III of Sweden officially founded it as a market town in 1775. It received full town rights in 1779. Initially, the population was small and consisted mainly of farmers. Because farming was forbidden within city limits, residents turned to trade and crafts.

The 19th century brought rapid industrialization to the city.

This growth was heavily influenced by the Finlayson textile factory. James Finlayson founded this factory in 1820. By 1850, the factory employed about 2,000 people. This success led to other major establishments like the Tampella factory. Other notable businesses included the Frenckell paper mill. The city's population grew from 7,000 in 1870 to 36,000 by 1900. This era also saw the rise of the Nokia Corporation. Fredrik Idestam established a pulp mill here in 1865.

Tampere has played a significant role in Finnish political history. In 1905, the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party held a conference here. This meeting was led by Vladimir Lenin. It took place while the leaders were fleeing from Russia. The conference helped decide to launch an armed insurrection. Tampere was also a major site during the 1918 Finnish Civil War. The city was a stronghold for the Finnish Socialist Workers' Republic.
