It was previously the capital of Quảng Nam Province. Today, the city is merged with Da Nang. As of 2019, the population of the city reached 122,374 people. The city serves as an important hub for the surrounding coastal region. It is known for its history, its food, and its natural beauty.

The climate in Tam Kỳ is classified as a tropical monsoon climate. This is known by the Köppen classification Am. It is very close to being a trade-wind tropical rainforest climate, or Af. This similarity exists because the dry season is quite short. The dry season occurs from February to April. During these months, the average rainfall is very low. This seasonal pattern shapes the environment of the South Central Coast.

Tam Kỳ has a complex and changing history. The town was first established in 1906. This happened under the rule of the Nguyễn dynasty. At that time, it functioned as an administrative and tax post. History shows that unspecified bandits once ransacked two tax posts in the area. This included the post at Tam Kỳ. Despite these challenges, the location eventually returned steady revenue to the government.

The city also played a role during the Vietnam War. During the period of the Republic of Vietnam, Tam Kỳ was important. It served as the main base for the US military in Quảng Nam Province. At that time, the province was known as Quảng Tín Province. On March 24, 1975, North Vietnamese forces captured the city. Later, in 1997, the local government under the Socialist Republic of Vietnam changed its status. They made Tam Kỳ the capital of Quảng Nam province.

Since becoming a provincial capital, the city has undergone substantial development. Many new things have grown within the urban area. Tam Kỳ is now famous for its specific local foods. One popular dish is Tam Kỳ chicken rice. This meal is recognized on a national level in Vietnam. Another famous local food is My Quang, which is a type of noodle. Visitors also travel to the area to see many pristine beaches.

Traveling to Tam Kỳ is quite easy due to several transport links. The Tam Kỳ Railway Station provides service to the city. This station connects Tam Kỳ to all major cities across Vietnam. There are also two international airports nearby. Chu Lai International Airport is located only 30 km from the city. Da Nang International Airport is further away at 70 km. A drive from Da Nang to Tam Kỳ takes about one and a half hours.

Additional transport options make the city very accessible. There is a free daily shuttle bus available. This bus runs between the airport and the center of Quảng Ngãi. People can also use regular car and bus services to move around. These connections help support the city's growth and its many visitors. The combination of rail, air, and road makes it a central point for the region.

Finally, the city is the birthplace of notable individuals. One such person was Julie Yip-Williams. She was born in Tam Kỳ in 1976. She lived until 2018 and became a well-known American lawyer. She was also a memoirist, which is a person who writes about their own life. Her life connects the local history of Tam Kỳ to the wider world. The city continues to be a place of interest in Vietnam.
