Talk radio

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Talk radio is a special way to listen to people speak. Instead of playing music, these stations focus on spoken word content. A host might give a long speech or talk with a guest. Many shows also include listener participation. This is when people call in by telephone to have a live conversation. Producers often screen these calls to keep the show interesting. In some places, like Australia, this is called talkback radio.

There are many different ways these shows work. On commercial stations, the shows are split into segments. These segments are separated by pauses for advertisements. Public or non-commercial stations do things differently. They might play music to separate the segments instead of ads. Some shows are also syndicated. This means the same program is sent to many different stations at once. In Canada, many private stations focus on local news instead of syndicated shows.
