The takin is a large animal from the eastern Himalayas. It belongs to the Caprinae family. This family includes goats and sheep. The takin is the national animal of Bhutan.

Takin have thick, shaggy coats. These coats help them stay warm. Their colors change based on where they live. Some are reddish-brown. Others are golden or creamy-white. Their hair can grow very long in the winter.

They have a large, arched nose. Both males and females have stout horns. These horns grow in parallel lines. They turn up at the ends. Takin also have large, two-toed hooves.

These animals live in many places. They live in valleys and rocky areas. They can live high up in the mountains. In the summer, large herds of 300 takin gather. In the winter, they move to lower forests.

Takin eat grass, leaves, and bamboo. They sometimes stand on their back legs to reach high leaves. They also need salt. They may stay at salt deposits for many days. Takin are now vulnerable. They face threats from hunting and lost homes.
