His most well-known book is a short novel called Kani Kōsen. In English, this is known as The Crab Cannery Ship. The story shows the hard lives of fishermen and workers on a boat. It describes how they stand up against a cruel manager. This book helped make him a leader in a type of writing called proletarian literature.

Writing was a big part of his life. He started by sending essays to magazines while he was in school. He even helped run a magazine for his school's former students. Later, he worked at a bank in Otaru. During this time, he also helped with a political campaign near Mount Yōtei. These real experiences helped him write his famous stories. He wanted to show the truth about how people lived and worked.

Kobayashi was born in Odate, Akita, Japan. When he was four, his family moved to Otaru, Hokkaido. His family did not have much money. However, his uncle helped pay for his school. He attended the Hokkaido Otaru Commercial High School. Later, he went to the Otaru Commercial School of Higher Learning. This school is now called the Otaru University of Commerce.

His life was filled with many hard moments. The police watched him because of his writing. He was arrested several times. In 1930, he moved to Tokyo to lead a group of writers. In 1933, he was arrested again at a meeting in Akasaka. He was taken to the Tsukiji Police Station. Sadly, he died there at the age of 29. The police said he had a heart attack. However, his family saw that he had been hurt by the police.

Many people still honor his memory today. His books are translated into many languages like English, French, and Spanish. In 2008, his famous book became a bestseller again. People in Otaru can go on bus tours to see places from his life. You can visit the Otaru Literary Museum to see a bronze mask of his face. There is also a monument for him in Akita.
