The Taiping Rebellion was a massive civil war in China during the 1800s.

This conflict happened between the ruling Qing dynasty and a group called the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom. The war lasted for 14 years, starting in 1850 and ending in 1864. It was one of the largest and bloodiest wars in human history. Some estimates say between 20 million and 30 million people died. This was about 5% to 10% of all the people living in China at that time.

The war changed the country's politics and economy forever.

The rebellion began because of many problems in China. The population grew very fast, but there was not enough farmland for everyone. People faced high taxes, rising rents, and many natural disasters. Many people also felt the Qing government was corrupt or weak.

These hard times made people look for new ways to live. Some people even formed secret groups to protect themselves. These groups eventually became part of the large movement that fought the government.

A man named Hong Xiuquan led the Taiping movement. He was a member of the Hakka group in southern China. After failing important exams, Hong had visions that changed his life. He believed he was the brother of Jesus Christ.

Hong wanted to replace the Qing dynasty with a new system. He also wanted to change the religion of the people in China. He called his movement the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom to show his religious goals.

The Taiping army grew very quickly and moved through southern China. In 1853, they captured the important city of Nanjing.

They renamed the city Tianjing, which means "heavenly capital." At its peak, the Taiping ruled over nearly 30 million people. They fought many battles across the Yangtze River valley.

The war involved many different armies and very difficult fighting for over a decade.

Eventually, the Qing government fought back using provincial armies. One leader, Zeng Guofan, organized the Xiang Army to fight the rebels.

The rebels grew weaker after internal fights and a failed campaign. Hong Xiuquan died in 1864 during a siege of Nanjing. Shortly after his death, the city fell to the Qing forces. The war left the Qing dynasty much weaker than it was before. This weakness helped lead to more changes in China later in the century.
