People use these instruments to make powerful music. It is more than just hitting a drum. The term also describes the way groups play together. This group style is called kumi-daiko.

Performers use special wooden sticks called bachi to play. They may also use voices or other instruments like strings. This music brings people together in many ways. It can be used for festivals or for art.

Making a taiko is a very careful job. It can take several years to finish one drum. Most taiko have a wooden body and skins on both sides. One type is called byō-uchi-daiko. These drums have the skin nailed to the wood. Another type is the shime-daiko. These use ropes or bolts to tighten the skin.

Some drums are shaped like a barrel. These are called nagadō-daiko. Makers often use a wood called keyaki.

Some clay figures called haniwa show people playing drums. These figures are from the 6th century. This was during the Kofun period. Some stories say the drums came from China or Korea. There is even a myth about a goddess named Ame-no-Uzume. She danced on a barrel to bring a goddess out of a cave. This story is seen as the start of music.

In the past, drums had many important roles. Soldiers used them to send orders during battles. They could call for an advance or a retreat.

Drums were also used in theater like Noh or Kabuki. They helped set the mood for a play. In religious ceremonies, drums are used in Shinto and Buddhist rites. For example, they are part of the Bon Festival. They help provide the rhythm for dancers.

Modern taiko performance changed a lot in the last century. In 1951, Daihachi Oguchi created the kumi-daiko style. He was a jazz musician who loved rhythms. Later, a group called Ondekoza was formed in 1961. Their leader, Den, took young men to Sado Island. They trained very hard by running long distances.
