In the past, drums had many jobs. They helped people talk to each other over long distances. Soldiers used them in wars to give orders. Drums also played a part in theater and religious rites. Today, many people play them in groups. This style is called kumi-daiko.

This way of playing was made famous by Daihachi Oguchi in 1951. He made music for many players on different sized drums.

There are different ways to make a taiko. Some have skins held on by ropes. These are called shime-daiko.

Other drums have the skin nailed to the wood. These are called byō-uchi-daiko. Most drum bodies are made from wood. A popular wood to use is called keyaki. Making these drums can take several years. People play them with wooden sticks called bachi.

Groups like Kodo travel all over the world to play.
