They wanted a new way to move. They did not want to copy Western ballet. Instead, they used movements from common people. The name Butoh can mean "dance of darkness." Dancers often use white body paint. They might move very slowly. Some dancers use strange costumes or clawed hands. They may even roll their eyes back.

Butoh can happen in many places. It can happen on a stage. It can also happen in a dark cave. Some groups travel all over the world. One famous group is called Sankai Juku.

There is no single way to do Butoh. Every dancer has their own style. It is a way to show deep feelings through the body.
