He graduated from the Corps of Cadets in Warsaw in 1766. This school taught military subjects and the liberal arts. Later, he moved to Paris to study architecture and painting. He took private lessons from the architect Jean-Rodolphe Perronet. While in France, he audited military lectures for five years. He also studied the French theory of physiocracy, which influenced his political views. These studies allowed him to master the science of fortification.

His early life was rooted in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth.

He was born in February 1746 at the Mereczowszczyzna estate. This area was then part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. His family belonged to the szlachta, or untitled nobility. They used the Roch III coat of arms.

His family was Ruthenian but had become Polonized over centuries. He felt a deep, multiethnic connection to the land of Lithuania.

In 1776, Kościuszko traveled to North America to join the American Revolutionary War.

He met Benjamin Franklin in Philadelphia to prove his engineering skills. After passing a geometry exam, he was commissioned as a colonel in the Continental Army. He worked on critical projects, such as fortifications at Fort Billingsport in New Jersey. He also surveyed defenses at Fort Ticonderoga. In 1783, the Continental Congress promoted him to the rank of brigadier general.

Kościuszko used engineering to change the course of battles.

At Ticonderoga, he recommended placing a battery on Sugar Loaf. Although his advice was initially ignored, the British later used that same high ground. To help the American retreat, Kościuszko designed a delay tactic. He had his men fell trees and dam streams to block the British. This slowed the enemy and allowed the Americans to cross the Hudson River. He later built robust, nearly impregnable defenses near Saratoga.

Upon returning to Europe, he faced the crumbling of his homeland. The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth suffered several partitions by Russia, Prussia, and Austria. In 1794, Kościuszko became the Supreme Commander of the Polish National Armed Forces. He led the Kościuszko Uprising to fight against the Russian Empire.

However, he was captured at the Battle of Maciejowice in October 1794. This defeat led to the Third Partition in 1795, which ended the Commonwealth.

Kościuszko's legacy is tied to his pursuit of universal freedom.

He was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson and shared many ideals. In 1798, he wrote a will regarding his American assets. He dedicated these funds to the education and freedom of enslaved people in the United States. Although the funds were never used for this purpose, his intent remains famous. He spent his final years in Switzerland and died in 1817.
