Casimir attended an elite college run by the Theatine religious order. He began his military career in 1762 as a page for the Duke of Courland. Later, he became the Starost of Zezulińce.

In 1767, Pulaski joined the Bar Confederation. This was an uprising against Russian influence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Pulaski became a colonel and led a unit of cavalry. He won early battles near Pohorełe and Starokostiantyniv in 1768. However, he also faced defeats at Kaczanówka and during a siege in Berdyczów. After being captured by Russian forces, he was released in June 1768. He returned to the fight despite internal political debates within the Confederation.

Pulaski became famous for his daring and sometimes independent leadership. He led a 4,000-strong army in Lithuania to gain international attention. One of his most significant achievements was defending the Jasna Góra monastery. Between late 1770 and early 1771, he helped hold the fortress against sieges.

This defense increased his reputation among the Confederates and people abroad. Some leaders called him a "loose cannon" because he often disregarded orders. He was described by observers as brave, honest, and highly spontaneous.

Benjamin Franklin recommended him for service in the colonies. Pulaski distinguished himself by saving the life of George Washington. He rose to the rank of general in the Continental Army. Alongside Michael Kovats, he helped organize Pulaski's Legion. This group helped reform the American cavalry as a whole.
