These stars are named after a star called T Tauri. It lives in the Taurus star-forming region.

These stars are not yet stable. They are in a stage called pre-main-sequence. This means they are still growing. They get smaller as they pull inward. This pull gives off power. This power makes them very bright. They are much brighter than older stars of the same mass. This is because they are larger in size.

T Tauri stars spin very fast. They might spin once every one to twelve days. The Sun takes about a month to spin once. These stars are very active. They have strong winds and jets of gas.

They also give off lots of X-rays.

Many of these stars have disks of dust. These are called protoplanetary disks. These disks can make new planets. Most T Tauri stars live in pairs. These are called binary star systems. Scientists can use lithium to find a star's age. Lithium is a special element found in these stars.
