T Tauri star

space Maturity 5-7 Next article →

T Tauri stars are very young stars in space. They are less than ten million years old. These stars are in a stage called pre-main-sequence. This means they are still growing and changing. They are found near huge molecular clouds.

They are named after a specific star called T Tauri. This star lives in the Taurus star-forming region. These stars are very important for learning about how stars begin.

These stars work in a special way. They are not yet stable like our Sun. Instead, they are contracting or pulling themselves inward. This pulling creates gravitational energy. That energy is what makes the star shine.

Because they are still large, they are much brighter than older stars. They will reach the main sequence in about 100 million years. At that point, they will start burning hydrogen.

People have studied these stars for a long time. The star T Tauri was first found in 1852. Later, a scientist named Alfred Harrison Joy did more work. He defined this whole class of stars in 1945. Scientists now look for many different types. Some are called Classical T Tauri stars. Others are called Weak-line or Naked T Tauri stars.

There are many interesting facts about these stars. They spin very fast, often every one to twelve days. This is much faster than the Sun. They also have very strong winds and gas jets.

These stars give off X-rays 1,000 times stronger than the Sun. They also have more lithium than older stars. Scientists can use the amount of lithium to find a star's age.

Many T Tauri stars have disks of dust around them. These are called protoplanetary disks. These disks might one day become solar systems.

They could eventually form planets like Earth. We have even seen planets around stars like PDS 70b. Most of these stars live in pairs called binary systems. This stage of life is a key part of how everything in space grows.
